Anorexia

Overview

Anorexia Nervosa or commonly called Anorexia is an eating disorder with a complete aversion to having food. Anorexia Nervosa can be clearly seen as a psychological disorder tending a person to lose weight. The people with anorexia show signs like food restriction, over-dieting, fear of gaining weight, low-weight/ under-weight, etc. This is commonly characterized by girls or women.

An Anorexic person has reduced appetite and a strong aversion to food and they wish to see themselves thin always. They fear of weight gain and are usually thin. Since this is an intense psychological condition of an eating disorder, the person may go for over dieting or self-starving.

There is a distinction between Anorexia and Anorexia Nervosa diagnosis. Anorexia is a syndrome of inability to have food causing increased weight loss. But Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological condition where a person may go to any extent to reduce weight even though they are light-weight. Bulimia nervosa is a condition of being at a normal weight or more.

The psychological causes of anorexia are, the person may have over perfectionism and with a feeling of limited control in life. Other causes can be obsessive-compulsive personality traits, inability to handle depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, poor stress management, etc. These people are ready to sacrifice anything to reduce their weight although they are having a low body mass index[BMI].

A person with anorexia is called anorexic and these people have fear of becoming fat. It is, in fact, a life-threatening eating disorder forcing a person to do self-starvation.

Mostly doctors examine a person for anorexia symptoms by evaluating their Body Mass Index[BMI]. Medical staffs conduct a detailed physical examination like measuring weight and height, checking blood pressure, heartbeat rate, and notes down the temperature. Sometimes doctors may examine the abdomen, monitor lungs, heart, etc. If required, they will suggest lab tests like blood count, etc.
