Bed/pressure sores


Bedsores are also known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers. Which develops on the skin and also on the underlying tissue resulting due to the continuous pressure in the skin. This is mostly formed in the bony parts of the body like heels, ankles, hips, and tailbones. When the patient in bed rests the movement of bones will be zero and pressure over skin increases which results in bedsores. There are four different bed sore types.

Mostly the first signs of bedsores are reddened or darkened area it will appear as dark skin, hard, and warm to touch.

There are different stages of bedsores and the looks will differ for every stage mostly it will be red, hard and warm to touch. They will be also painful and like blisters with discolored skin around it.

Pressure sore treatment includes

Reposition your body for every 1 – 2 hours

Use special mattress like an air bed with low pressure and other assistance devices

Keep skin dry and clean

Use aloe vera gel, powder or any ointment prescribed by the doctor for easy cleaning.

Saline water will get rid of excess fluid and remove loose dead skin.

Pain killers are used as medicine for bed sores to reduce pain.

At home, we should have a clean environment to avoid bed sores moisturizing the body will play an effective role. Clean the wound surface with mild soap and water and change position often to avoid extra bedsores. Cover the sores with a special bandage so that it won’t get infected. Don’t use hydrogen peroxide or iodine cleanser. Proper attention to treatment is important in bed sore treatment and prevention.

Bed sores causes are because of the pressure on the skin due to the lack of mobility and proper care like changing the lying position will reduce bedsore so it is an exposure of nursing neglect.
