Diarrhea

Overview

Diarrhea[Gastroenteritis] is the gastrointestinal disorder causing the bowel movements of watery stools more than usual in a day. Watery bowel movements lasting for a short period is called acute diarrhea. If it lasts for long, then it is called chronic diarrhea. In some cases, the person may suffer from stomach cramps, high fever, vomiting, and dizziness along with watery stool discharge.

Acute diarrhea will stop itself after some days. It can be treated at home itself by drinking plenty of clean water and following BRAT diet, or by taking electrolyte solution. It is important to stay hydrated especially infants and children with diarrhea. But, if there is fever and stomach pain then you must consult a physician. Diarrhea during pregnancy must be treated fast as it can cause infection later.

The causes can be

  1. A food allergy or food poisoning
  2. Any viral infection/bacterial infection.
  3. Lactose/Fructose Intolerance or the side effect of certain cancer drugs.
  4. Due to Abdominal or gall bladder removal surgery.

Acute diarrhea lasts only for a short period of time may be up to two days. It may reside on its own or with some home remedies.

But, in the case of chronic diarrhea, it lasts 4 or more weeks. It can be due to gastrointestinal disease, causing malabsorption of food and inflammation.

It is advised to take only small meals instead of heavy ones. Water intake frequently can make you stay hydrated. Make sure you take only hygiene food and water. Try to consume salty food like soup, pretzels, potassium-rich food like potatoes, fruits, etc.

Diarrhea is a common health issue affecting bowel causing watery stool discharge. Acute diarrhea lasts for two days and will get cured on its own. Chronic diarrhea can last up to 4 weeks which can be due to persistent infection/inflammatory bowel disease
