Hot flashes


If you are feeling sudden hotness or intense warmth caused not by any external causes then you have got hot flashes. The upper portion of the body gets a hot feeling, redness and over sweating can occur. In cancer patients, it is a common discomfort. Other causes of hot flashes are radiation therapy, certain medication reaction or surgery.

Other than menopause, the causes of hot flashes can be thyroid that builds up excess amounts of thyroid hormones. These hormones increase body metabolism leading to sweating and hot flashes. Consumption of certain food items can cause hot flashes.

Women who are approaching menopause suffer from hot flushes. It is triggered by hormone level changes. Over sweating at night happens due to a reduced level of estradiol. Hot flashes can be caused by factors other than menopause-like cancer symptoms, thyroid, medication, etc.

Acupuncture is a good remedy to control hot flashes. Consult a physician before you take supplements or herbs as a natural remedy for hot flashes. The most common herbs taken for hot flashes treatment are Black Cohosh, Ginseng, Kava, Dong Quai, Red clover, etc.

In some cases, night sweats are the pronounced symptom of cancer. Cancers associated with night sweats are leukemia and lymphoma. Adrenal tumors and carcinoid tumors can also cause night sweats. Prostate cancer treatment can be a cause of hot flashes in men.

The frequency and intensity of hot flashes differ among people. The average frequency of hot flashes is between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. In most of the women, the hot flashes menopause last between 6 months and 2 years.
