Urinary incontinence

A person with urinary incontinence initiates urination without their knowledge. In this case, the involuntary urine leakage occurs even if they don’t want to do so. It happens when the urinary sphincter gets weakened and its control is gone. Women experience this more compared to men.

The different types of urinary incontinence are Stress incontinence, Overflow incontinence, Urge Incontinence, Functional incontinence. These can be due to poor bladder closure/contraction/overaction etc. Functional incontinence happens when one cannot reach till washroom due to medication/health problems.

When any issue occurs to muscles or nerves controlling the urination and urine bladder, urinary incontinence can occur. As it is mainly seen in women, certain health events in their lifecycle can cause this. For example over-weight, pregnancy, menopause, childbirth, etc.

The Urinary incontinence treatments are taking medications like anticholinergics, alpha-blockers, mirabegron, topical estrogen, etc. These are helpful in treating the overactive bladder.

Sometimes certain chronic diseases like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, etc can affect the nerves controlling the bladder. Also, kidney stone presence paves way for urinary incontinence.

Urine leakage happens when one cannot control urination. Urine leakage can happen during coughing/sneezing. Sometimes weak bladder muscles and sphincter dysfunction cause urinary incontinence.
